  • The Eddington Experiment

The Eddington Experiment

Man making an 'o' shape with his hands.

Some experiments can only be done when the Sun and the Moon line up just right! Learn about one that helped prove Einstein’s general theory of relativity.

Shortly before the April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse, we sat down with Executive Dean Rick Van Kooten, who also happens to be a physicist, and asked him how eclipses have advanced the science of his field. He described the Eddington experiment, a test of Einstein’s theory of general relativity. This experiment could only be done during the unique circumstances made possible by a total solar eclipse.
