There are two ways to observe an eclipse. One is to view it directly with a proper certified ISO 12312-2 solar viewer. The other way is to view it indirectly with any number of devices made for this purpose. This is done by projecting the image of the sun onto another surface.

IU Astronomy graduate student Kristin Baker demonstrates how to make and use one of the most popular types of indirect viewers, a cereal box pinhole projector. Supplies needed for this project are:

• a cereal box
• scissors or a box cutter
• a white index card
• a smooth piece of foil
• transparent tape
• a push pin
