Science Fest is soon, so we went back to our resident meteorologist, Dr. Cody Kirkpatrick, to ask for an update on the weather forecast for Science Fest on Saturday, April 6, and for eclipse day, Monday, April 8. Here is what he said:
“Today is March 29, so we are now 8 days away from Science Fest and 10 days away from the Eclipse. That’s still pretty far away for us to have a lot of certainty about the exact weather on a particular day… let alone for just one hour on that Monday afternoon!
“But we are starting to get some ideas, yes. When we are still more than a week away from an event, we start to look for trends in big weather systems, midlatitude cyclones. Those are the kinds of systems that over a couple days bring us warm south winds, then rain and storms, and then a cold front. Those are very common in the Midwest this time of year. And it does look like that close to that weekend — give or take a couple days — one of those big systems will be moving through the US.
“Although we’re not exactly sure which days will be cloudy and rainy, but we are getting more sure that at least one of them probably will be. Ask me again in a couple of days, and our certainty will be a little bit higher. That’s how weather forecasting goes.”
Ok, Cody, we’ll be back in a couple of days!
